FAQ
Questions about Excavation and Landscaping
The machinery depends on the type of property you are excavating. A backhoe, also called a rear or back actor, has a digging bucket at the end of a hinged mechanical arm. The buckets are smaller and usually will not dig deeper than 12-16 feet. Most operators don’t use them below 10 feet, but they are often all one needs.
The standard excavator is larger and is often referred to as a “crawler” excavator, because they normally run on tracks, like a tank, instead of wheels. Using tracks means the heavier weight can be distibuted more evenly over the base to lower its center of gravity and provide more stability for heavy lifting and moving. The digger for the excavator is also able to rotate 360 degrees, which can be convenient.
Yes we can. Once we have our heavy equipment on the site, it is more convenitent to continue as much work on the proerty as possible. The property can be dug up for the foundations, then most of the major landscaping to prepare it for a lawn and/or gardens, and the driveway can be done as well.
Yes we can. Once the major excavation and landscaping work is done for the proerty, it is important to secure its border to prevent soil erosion and to plan the drainage for the property. Each location and property is different, but locations on downslopes require careful planning. Retaining walls are not always required to allow for proper drainage, but they are a nice addition to the exterior look. In some cases, the size of the building and/or type and slope of the building lot makes s retaing wall a necessity.
Usually, the excavation work for a small property can be done in 3-5 days, but it can take longer. There are two main factors that can lengthen the amount of time required. One is if the soil is a lot of clay, which is soft and harder on the equipment. The other factor is whether there are large rocks and boulders to contend with. Usually, the type of ground upon which one is building is well known (though rocks are rocks!) and you can plan in your budget for a lengthier excvation period.
The short answer is “yes”. There are always safety concerns with any job site involving the use of heavy equipment and excavating large amounts of material. All on-site workers are trained to be aware of and maintain safety protocols at all times. When the operators are fully engaged we prefer that clients and interested people keep a safe distance from all the equipment to ensure their safety from any material and the machinery.
Underground Landscaping has never had an accident, but we are fully insured and all of our equipment undergoes a rigorous maitenance schedule to ensure they do not break down on a job site. Each worker is fully covered through worker’s compensation.
